Foreigners Who Overstayed Visas Can Now Regularize Their Stay
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the launch of an online immigration amnesty portal, allowing foreigners who have overstayed their visas to regularize their stay before August 1, 2025. The portal, set to go live in July, aims to provide a one-time opportunity for affected individuals to adjust their status without facing immediate penalties.
The decision is part of the government's efforts to improve border control, national security, and proper documentation of foreign nationals residing in the country. According to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the amnesty portal is a chance for foreigners who have overstayed their visas to regularize their stay without facing the full weight of the law.
The portal will be accessible at (link unavailable), where eligible individuals can create an account and submit applications with supporting documents, such as a valid passport and proof of residence. Those who fail to regularize their stay by August 1 will face stiff penalties, including daily fines of $15, re-entry bans, and possible deportation.
The government has emphasized that the law will be enforced 100% after the amnesty period, and foreigners who have overstayed their visas are advised to take advantage of the amnesty period to avoid penalties. The launch of the amnesty portal is part of a broader effort to digitize and reform immigration processes in Nigeria.
